FAQ

Alumitech was built on the basis that there was a need in the market for a better radiator that fit directly with the styling of the original radiator that G.M produced ,for the enthusiast that wanted something that looks closer to stock then anything on the market, if painted black most people think its stock ,short of a Harrison embossment.

We started with Chevelle radiator  but found that there was a bigger need for other models.. so we have expanded our lines .
early model lines (down flow radiators) 64 to 67 Chevelle .GTO  Chevy II and the list is growing
67 to 69 Camaro  and 2nd gen
Most G.M cars ,thankfully G.M in there infinite wisdom produced radiators that cross referenced across the board to fit several models

Aluminum and Brass copper

The reason that aluminum radiators outperform their copper/brass/solder brethern at all. The reasons that the aluminum radiators work better is a combination of mechanical design issues moreover.

First, larger tubes (typically 1"+ aluminum vs. 1/2" for copper) means a two-fold improvement in heat transfer design and efficiency. The larger tubes means higher coolant flow rates (higher flow means higher exchange rates) and higher coolant turbulence (assures even transfer of heat to coolant) ....both increasing efficiency.

Second, due to the modern, elongated design of these primary tubes, the actual contact area to the fins from the tubes (the primary heat transfer point) is much higher the larger (or more elongated) the tubes are as well. This factor plays a huge part in inprovement in efficiency. In short, it's hard to get smaller tubes to contact finnal areas effectively. The large tubed aluminum elongated tubes make a very good surface to contact by the fins. Contact areas can be as much as a 200% better in larger tube designs as opposed to smaller ones.

Third, the thickness of the tube material also plays into this. Because aluminum is so much stronger than copper, the tubes are typically much thinner in wall construction which improves the efficiency dramatically.

Lastly, solder is a terrible conductor....typically less than 50 W/mK (conductivity number). Aluminum radiators are typically welded with aluminum which transfers heat at four times the rate of solder.

All of these aforementioned design issues are the reasons that two-row, 1" aluminum radiators typically have 30% more efficiency than four-row copper/brass/solder cores.

If you have two radiators, both the same size, same environment, then test values will remain the same. The thermal conductivity of brass is .29 and aluminum is .41. All things the same, a larger number for k will yield a larger Q or heat transfer. So, an aluminum radiator transfers heat faster then brass even when they are the same size. So, a 2 row 1 inch rows aluminum radiator can be designed to cool better then a 4 row 3/8 tube  brass copper. This is the basis of Alumitech's design.

Before we begin lets think about how much we have invested in our engines ....yes perhaps thousands of dollars !

Cooling comes down to a simple thing called (BTUs )

In simple terms your engine creates (BTUs) if your cooling system is not efficient enough to disperse the heat generated
we tend to over heat !

NOW TO KILL A FEW MISNOMERS ABOUT COOLING SYSTEM QUICK FIXES OR WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD?

Thermostats---Running a 160 degree thermostat will not bring down engine temperatures it only controls (OPENING TEMPERATURES )
Most cares will not see 160 degrees till they have been parked for a while One should never run anything less then a 180 degree thermostat ... why you might ask .. the sooner you reach 180 degrees the sooner you burn off contaminates

WATER PUMPS ---The big three put a lot of time and testing into flow rates to calculate maximum performance to match the engine with the radiators....the test results show a DEFINED window of efficiency .. anything less and anything more can be a deterrent to cooling .. test results don’t lie

GIMMICKS ----Wetter water and so on ... if they really worked why aren't the big coolant companies marketing them ???
Maybe a solution of 60% water 40% antifreeze will will help keep things cool , more antifreeze then water is not a good thing .. too thick !

PRESSURE CAPS --- Running a higher lbs pressure cap then standard will only serve to increase boiling points till the radiator boils over no help on cooling there !

FANS ---Electric fans are wonderful they are operated by a sensor while your sitting in traffic and temps climb , where a engine driven fan just cant pull the ( cfms ) To keep things in check .. they do the job , the more cfms the better , there's almost no end to the cooling efficiency the higher the cfms go ... once again test data , and lets not forget how they don’t steal horse power from your motor .

BRASS COPPER VERSES ALUMINUM
Test data doesn't lie ...there's a true 30% more efficient btu rating with aluminum over brass copper .. once again its all about BTUs
If your running a 4 row brass copper radiator and running hot, .. you will see a 30% to 50% better btu coefficient rating with a aluminum radiator with 2 rows of I inch tubes over a 4 row brass copper radiator .

IT really does surprise me that there are thousands of dollars invested in some motors out there to make them look sharp, and run strong ,and yet there are still people that haven't spent the time or money on there cooling systems to eliminate the over heating problems , the cooling system , and oil are the life blood of the engine ...its something to think about .
